How to Use This Pronunciation Checker

Step 1: Type any English word in the box above. Start with a word you find difficult, for example schedule, comfortable, or entrepreneur.

Step 2: Press Hear Pronunciation to listen to the correct pronunciation. You can change the voice and the speed. Slow speed is best when you are learning a new word for the first time.

Step 3: Press Check My Pronunciation, allow microphone access, and speak the word. The tool listens and tells you whether your pronunciation was recognised as the correct word. If it was not recognised, listen again and repeat slowly.

Why Correct Pronunciation Matters

Pronunciation is the part of English that other people notice first. You can know the meaning of a word and still be misunderstood if you say it differently from how native speakers expect it. Words like colonel, which is pronounced like kernel, or comfortable, where the middle sounds almost disappear, cause trouble even for advanced learners. That is because English spelling and English sounds do not always match.

A good habit is simple: listen first, repeat second, and check third. Listen to the word two or three times and notice which syllable is stressed, because stress often changes the whole sound of a word. Then say the word yourself, out loud, not only in your head. Finally, check yourself by speaking into the microphone and seeing whether the word is recognised. This listen, repeat, and check loop is much more effective than reading a phonetic spelling alone.

This free tool is built for students, job seekers, and anyone preparing for an interview, a presentation, or an English test. It works for single words, and it is best used one word at a time so you can focus on each sound. For phrases and full sentences, try our Text to Speech tool, which reads longer text aloud.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this pronunciation checker free?

Yes, it is completely free and you do not need to sign up or create an account.

How does the pronunciation check work?

When you press the microphone button, your browser listens to your voice and converts it to text. If the recognised text matches the word you typed, your pronunciation is correct. This feature works best in Google Chrome with microphone permission allowed.

Does it show the phonetic spelling too?

Yes. When a dictionary entry is available, the tool shows the phonetic spelling and a short meaning, and sometimes a native speaker audio recording as well.

Can I check British and American pronunciation?

The voice list includes English voices from different regions when your browser provides them. Choose the voice you want to practise with from the voice menu.

Why was my pronunciation not recognised?

Speech recognition can struggle with background noise, a very quiet voice, or a fast delivery. Try a quiet room, speak slowly, and listen to the correct pronunciation first before you try again.

Does it work for any English word?

It works for most common English words. Very rare words, names, and brand names may not have a dictionary entry, but the Hear button will still pronounce them with the browser voice.
